We Want Some Mauer..!

This week was a wild one in the sports world, I feel it's only right to start off with the King himself, LeBron James. After having a spectacular 38 point appearance, he hit the game winning last second 3 point shot off of an inbounds pass from Mo Williams to win game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Orlando Magic, he finished with 41 points.

Next, I am going to talk about MY Denver Nuggets. To be quite honest, they are playing extremely well right now and in my eyes they have looked better than the LA Lakers thus far in this series. Last night, upon having a spectacular TEAM game, the Nuggets tied the series at 2 games a piece and more importantly, they got their bench confidence back.

However, these sports stories are compelling this week but they just couldn't edge out the Twins and the winning streak they used to be on. The Twins are extremely hot right now, and the Metro dome has hosted the 2nd most home runs in a single stadium this season, behind the Yankees and their new hitter friendly ball park. Joe Mauer steals the show this week because he is hitting .444 right now with 11 HR and 31 RBI. This is huge because Mauer started the season on the DL, and since returning to the lineup he has hit ten home runs in fewer than 100 games, for the first time in his career..!

TC Tragedy

Well, this weekend most certainly did produce some intense sports highlights. Some of which were: John Gruden replacing Tony Kornheiser on MNF, TO arriving to a packed airport in Buffalo, the Lakers and Magic clenched and set the match ups for the NBA conference championships, and the Penguins winning game 1 vs. Carolina. Not to mention the return of Michael Vick possibly, Brett Favre possibly, and Greg Paulis (he signed with Syracuse to play QB after 4 years of playing point at Duke!)

If their weren't an event that trumped all of these other events over the weekend than this would be a really tough decision to make. Luckily, the Yankees swept the Twins this weekend, and 3 out of their 4 wins came in walk-off style. This series was huge for the Bronx Bombers and seemed to lift the home team spirit and confidence (at the Twins expense).

This was never a difficult decision for me, when A-Rod hit the walk-off homer on Friday night I thought, "It really doesn't' get much better than that." But then Johnny Damon did the same thing in extras the night after making it 3 night in a row that the Yanks walked off. ILL!

Wild World of Sports

OK so Monday night wasn't exactly the most exciting night in sports but we still had some major highlights..! First and foremost I feel as though I need to give credit where credit is due, Glen (Big Baby) Davis hit a big time shot at a big time moment for the Boston Celtics on Sunday night and I neglected to mention him in my last post. Davis hit a 2 point shot off of a pick and roll he set for Paul Pierce as the last remaining seconds were winding down in game four, evening the series at 2 games a piece.

Moving on to Monday, we had some serious NHL playoff action. First of all I should mention that the series between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Vancouver Canucks ended last night with the Blackhawks winning a thriller game 6, to the tune of 7 goals to 5. The Blackhawks were trailing throughout this entire game until the final minutes, but, thanks to Patrick Kane's hat trick and Jonathan Toews game winning overtime goal, Chicago advances and will now face either the Detroit Redwings or the Anaheim Mighty Ducks in the Western Conference Finals. Patrick Kane joined elite company on Monday by becoming the third player in these 2009 NHL playoffs to achieve a hat trick, the other two players with hat tricks are Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin.

We had some other intriguing action on Monday night including: Johan Santana getting shelled in his start against the Atlanta Braves, LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers making a clean sweep of the Atlanta Hawks, and of coarse the Washington Capitols winning an overtime thriller and tying the series with the Pittsburgh Penguins at 3 games a piece forcing a game 7 in which you may see a top play in blog for tomorrow.

However, once again, the top moment and best game from Monday came for the Denver Nuggets vs. the Dallas Mavericks series in the NBA Western Conference Semifinals. This game was so spectacular because Dirk Nowitzki, who had a very bad game on Saturday, had a 44 point performance and aided in the prevention of a sweep for the Nuggets. My moment of the game was Dirk's high arching, go ahead shot, he made with less than a minute left to play in the fourth. Nowitzki had 19 of his 44 points in the 4th quarter, and needed every point to out due Carmelo Anthony who put in 41 points of his own on Monday night.

This game and this performance was huge not only for the Mavericks but also for Dirk himself. It was essential for Dirk to have such a huge performance because his team was down 3 games to 0 and were in danger of being swept AT HOME... He struggled from the field in game 3 and his team suffered because of it... I picked the Nuggets to win in 4 games but I now see that they will have to go back to Denver in order to close out the series. It shouldn't take more than 5 games, and I believe the Nuggets will win the next one and meet the Lakers in the Western Conference Finals.

The Best Moments in Sports this Weekend

We had quite the weekend in sports... The Houston Rockets got gigantic news (no point intended) when their all-star center Yao Ming was diagnosed with a hair line fracture in his foot, thus ending the Rockets hopes of beating the Los Angeles Lakers... NOT SO FAST... The Rockets were a ten point underdog going into Sundays game, but to every ones surprise, they WON 99 to 87. Believe it or not, this game has nothing to do with the biggest moment in sports this weekend.

Another amazing sport story from this weekend is, despite Alexander Ovechkin's 2 goals in game 5, the Pittsburgh Penguins managed to win the game with an overtime goal to gain the lead in the series 3-2. This overtime goal was scored by a Washington Capitol player on his OWN GOAL..! Pittsburgh has now won 3 straight games to gain the advantage in this series. And again believe it or not, this still is not my top play of the weekend.

There were plenty of other games and plenty of other highlights this weekend in the world of sports. Including: Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau hitting back to back home runs for the Minnesota Twins for the first time this season, Torii Hunter's home run stealing and game saving catch over the wall in Anaheim to ice the win for the Angels over the HOT Kansas City Royals, and who will ever forget the top seeded UC Irvine beating USC in one of the best Men's Collegiate Volleyball Championships ever. This championship went to 5 sets with UC Irvine taking the trophy in a 15-12 over-time thriller. And, as you could probably guess, these still aren't my top plays of the weekend.

Hands down the best game and the best play of the weekend have to go to the Denver Nuggets vs. the Dallas Mavericks, this game 3 was close the entire way, and going into the last minute the Nuggets found themselves down by 2. However, they didn't give into the pressure they felt on the road, and with the clock winding down, the Mavericks still had a foul to give. Antoine Wright, a forward for the Mavericks, attempted to foul Carmelo Anthony with 1.0 seconds left on the clock, but the officials let them play on. Carmelo Anthony hit a 3 point shot and essentially won the game for the Nuggets, all of this action happened within the last minute of the game, and was all caused by a missed call by the referee's of this game. This is such a big play at such a big time because this puts the Nuggets up 3 games to 0 in a best of 7 game series and basically has the Mavericks with one foot in the grave.
